One day my mentor said, "Don, if you want to be wealthy and happy, learn this lesson well: Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job."

Since that time I've been working on my own personal development. And I must admit that this has been the most challenging assignment of all. This business of personal development lasts a lifetime.

You see, what you become is far more important than what you get. The important question to ask on the job is not, "What am I getting?" Instead, you should ask, "What am I becoming?" Getting and becoming are like Siamese twins: What you become directly influences what you get. Think of it this way: Most of what you have today you have attracted by becoming the person you are today.

I've also found that income rarely exceeds personal development. Sometimes income takes a lucky jump, but unless you learn to handle the responsibilities that come with it, it will usually shrink back to the amount you can handle.

If someone hands you a million dollars, you'd better hurry up and become a millionaire. A very rich man once said, "If you took all the money in the world and divided it equally among everybody, it would soon be back in the same pockets it was before."

It is hard to keep that which has not been obtained through personal development

So here's the great axiom of life:

Four Emotions That Can Lead to Life Change

Emotions are the most powerful forces inside us. Under the power of emotions, human beings can perform the most heroic (as well as barbaric) acts. To a great degree, civilization itself can be defined as the intelligent channeling of human emotion. Emotions are fuel and the mind is the pilot, which together propel the ship of civilized progress.

Which emotions cause people to act? There are four basic ones; each, or a combination of several, can trigger the most incredible activity. The day that you allow these emotions to fuel your desire is the day you'll turn your life around.

1) DISGUST

One does not usually equate the word "disgust" with positive action. And yet properly channeled, disgust can change a person's life. The person who feels disgusted has reached a point of no return. He or she is ready to throw down the gauntlet at life and say, "I've had it!" That's what I said after many humiliating experiences at age 25. I said, "I don't want to live like this anymore. I've had it with being broke. I've had it with being embarrassed, and I've had it with lying."

Yes, productive feelings of disgust come when a person says, "Enough is enough."

The "guy" has finally had it with mediocrity. He's had it with those awful sick feelings of fear, pain and humiliation. He then decides he is not going to live like this anymore." Look out! This could be the day that turns a life around. Call it what you will, the "I've had it" day, the "never again" day, the "enough's enough" day. Whatever you call it, it's powerful! There is nothing so life-changing as gut-wrenching disgust!

2) DECISION

Most of us need to be pushed to the wall to make decisions. And once we reach this point, we have to deal with the conflicting emotions that come with making them. We have reached a fork in the road. Now this fork can be a two-prong, three-prong, or even a four-prong fork. No wonder that decision-making can create knots in stomachs, keep us awake in the middle of the night, or make us break out in a cold sweat.

Making life-changing decisions can be likened to internal civil war. Conflicting armies of emotions, each with its own arsenal of reasons, battle each other for supremacy of our minds. And our resulting decisions, whether bold or timid, well thought out or impulsive, can either set the course of action or blind it. I don't have much advice to give you about decision-making
except this:

Whatever you do, don't camp at the fork in the road. Decide. It's far better to make a wrong decision than to not make one at all. Each of us must confront our emotional turmoil and sort out our feelings.

3) DESIRE

How does one gain desire? I don't think I can answer this directly because there are many ways. But I do know two things about desire:

a. It comes from the inside not the outside.
b. It can be triggered by outside forces.

Almost anything can trigger desire. It's a matter of timing as much as preparation. It might be a song that tugs at the heart. It might be a memorable sermon. It might be a movie, a conversation with a friend, a confrontation with the enemy, or a bitter experience. Even a book or an article such as this one can trigger the inner mechanism that will make some people say, "I want it now!"

Therefore, while searching for your "hot button" of pure, raw desire, welcome into your life each positive experience. Don't erect a wall to protect you from experiencing life. The same wall that keeps out your disappointment also keeps out the sunlight of enriching experiences. So let life touch you. The next touch could be the one that turns your life around.

4) RESOLVE

Resolve says, "I will." These two words are among the most potent in the English language. I WILL. Benjamin Disraeli, the great British statesman, once said, "Nothing can resist a human will that will stake even its existence on the extent of its purpose." In other words, when someone resolves to "do or die," nothing can stop him.

The mountain climber says, "I will climb the mountain. They've told me it's too high, it's too far, it's too steep, it's too rocky, it's too difficult. But it's my mountain. I will climb it. You'll soon see me waving from the top or you'll never see me, because unless I reach the peak, I'm not coming back." Who can argue with such resolve?

When confronted with such iron-will determination, I can see Time, Fate and Circumstance calling a hasty conference and deciding, "We might as well let him have his dream. He's said he's going to get there or die trying."

The best definition for "resolve" I've ever heard came from a schoolgirl in Foster City, California. "I think resolve means promising yourself you will never give up." That's it! That's the best definition I've ever heard: PROMISE YOURSELF YOU'LL NEVER GIVE UP.

Think about it! How long should a baby try to learn how to walk? How long would you give the average baby before you say, "That's it, you've had your chance"? You say that's crazy? Of course it is. Any mother would say, "My baby is going to keep trying until he learns how to walk!" No wonder everyone walks.

There is a vital lesson in this. Ask yourself, "How long am I going to work to make my dreams come true?" I suggest you answer, "As long as it takes." That's what these four emotions are all about.

Apply Your Life Changing Emotions

Our Results Are Only As Good As Our Plan

All good things in life are upstream, but the natural flow of life is that downward, negative pull. To combat that downward pull, you need a plan, a map to help you reach your desired destination.

As we all know, our results are only as good as our plan. My mentors, taught me that it's not what happens that determines the major part of our future, because what happens, happens to us all. Instead, they taught me that the key is what we do about it. If we start the process of change by developing a plan, doing something different in this next year than we did the previous year, it won't matter how small those efforts start. Start doing different things with the same set of circumstances - the ones we've always had and cannot change - and see what miracles occur. If we start the miracle process and change ourselves, then everything changes. And here's what is interesting, the difference between success and failure is so subtle. Let me explain by giving you my definitions of failure and success.

Here it is: Failure is a few Errors in judgment repeated every day. The man says, "Well I didn't walk around the block today and it didn't kill me, so it must be okay." No, no, it is that kind of error in judgment that after six years has him out of breath and panting as he walks from his car to his office. You can't make those kinds of mistakes; it will end up costing you.

Now, here is my definition of success: A few simple Disciplines practiced every day. Do you see the distinction? A few disciplines... Here's a little phrase we've all heard, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." And my question to you is, "What if that's true?" How simple and easy is that plan?

The fact is, when you look at successful people, you will almost always discover a plan behind their success. They know what they want, they work out a plan that will get them where they want to go, and they work their plan. It is the foundation for success. We as humans have the unique ability to affect change in our lives; it is through our own conscious choice when we engage in the miracle process of personal development that we are able to transform our nature and our lives.

So, what are some good ideas on developing a plan that will work well and take you to the finish line powerfully and in style? Here are some major points to keep in mind:

Develop the Plan for You. Some people are very detail-oriented and they will be able to follow an intricate plan closely. Others are a little more "free-wheeling" and not really "detail" people. That is okay too. In all the of my years, people have asked the question, "what plan is the right plan?" And my answer, the plan that fits you. Your plan, the one you develop that is unique to you and for you. You see, each of us is unique and motivated by different factors and you've got to develop one that is right for you and fits you. Some plans will not be as intricate as others but we all must have a plan, along with goals in that plan, to move us along the program. If you are a free spirit type, don't tell yourself you are going to spend 2 hours a day with a book and tapes and journal. It probably won't happen and you will get discouraged! Whatever your personality, your strengths and your weaknesses, develop the plan around them! This is not a one-plan-fits-all proposition.

Establish Times to Spend Working on the Material. It may be every Sunday night. It may be 20 minutes each morning. It may be in the car listening to CDs every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Whatever it is, set the times and do it. In your step-by-step plan, put down points that you can accomplish every week. They should be specific and achievable. Develop the discipline and take those steps every day, which will move you closer to your goals and where you want to be.

Keep a Journal. Take notes. It may be on paper, it may be on a micro-recorder. My mentors taught me not to trust my memory, but to write it down, to find one place to gather the information that affects change. And that advice has served me well all these years. Record the ideas and inspiration that will carry you from where you are to where you want to be. Take notes on the ideas that impact you most. Put down your thoughts and ideas. Brainstorm with yourself on where you are going and what you want to do. Record your dreams and ambitions. Your journals are a gathering place for all the valuable information that you will find. If you are serious about becoming wealthy, powerful, sophisticated, healthy, influential, cultured, unique, if you come across something important write it down. Two people will listen to the same material and different ideas will come to each one. Use the information you gather and record it for further reflection, for future debate and for weighing the value that it is to you.

Reflect. Create time for reflection -- a time to go back over, to study again the things you've learned and the things you've done each day. I call it "running the tapes again" so that the day locks firmly in your memory so that it serves as a tool. As you go through the material in this plan, you will want to spend time reflecting on its significance for you. Regularly set aside time - here are some good guidelines for times to reflect: At the end of the day. Take a few minutes at the end of each day and go back over the day - who'd you talk to, who'd you see, what did they say, what happened and how'd you feel, what went on. A day is the piece of the mosaic of your life. Next, take a few hours at the end of the week to reflect on the week's activities - I would suggest at least one half-hour. Also during that weekly time, take a few minutes to reflect on how this material should be applied to your life and circumstances. Take a half day at the end of the month and a weekend at the end of the year so that you've got it so that it never disappears, to ensure that the past is even more valuable and will serve your future well.

Set Goals. Remember that your plan is the roadmap for how you are going to get to your goals, so you have to have them. Of all the things that changed my life for the better (and most quickly), it was learning how to set goals. Mastering this unique process can have a powerful affect on your life too. I remember shortly after I met my mentors, they asked me if I had a list of my goals, and of course I didn't. He suggested to me that because I lacked a set of clearly defined goals that he could guess my bank balance within a few hundred dollars... and he did! Well, my mentors immediately began helping me define my view of the future, my dreams. They taught me to set goals because it is the greatest influence on a person's future and the greatest force that will pull a person in the direction that they want to go. But the future must be planned, well designed to exert a force that pulls you towards the promise of what can be.

Act. Act on your plan. What separates the successful from the unsuccessful so many times is that the successful simply do it. They take action, they aren't necessarily smarter than others; they just work the plan. And the time to act is when the emotion is strong. Because if you don't, here's what happens - it's called the law of diminishing intent. We intend to act when the idea strikes us, when the emotion is high, but if we delay and we don't translate that into action fairly soon, the intention starts to diminish, diminish and a month from now it's cold and a year from now it can't be found. So set up the discipline when the idea is strong, clear and powerful - that's the time to work the plan. Otherwise the emotion is wasted unless you capture the emotion and put it into disciplined activities and translate it into equity. And here's what is interesting: all disciplines affect each other; everything affects everything. That's why the smallest action is important -- because the value and benefits that you receive from that one little action will inspire you to do the next one and the next one... So step out and take action on your plan because if the plan is good, then the results can be miraculous.

The following paragraphs point out some financial problems we are knee-deep within, but read to the end and find some encouragement.

I'm sure most you you readers have been affected
by the "Economic Crisis" we are in. If you have an
Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM) your rates have
risen way beyond the enticing low entry rates.

Interest rates have fallen, but due to greed and
financial concern the rates banks charge their
customers remains high.

It is NOT the result of lack of regulation. It is
the result of the harmful loans for unqualified
home buyers demanded by corrupt politicians
and guaranteed by Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac.
"A POLITICAL FORM OF "OVER-REGULATION"!

After phony assurances by numerous paid-off
politicians Fannie and Freddie are BANKRUPT!
Now all taxpayers are on the hook for "Bail-Out".

The continued inflationary wholesale printing of
"Fiat" money (backed only by a promise) is costly,
and now we are promised greater deficit spending
compounded by greater and greater taxes on everyone!

Increased "Social Programs" and government
employment are the greatest drag on the economy,
because they are paid out of taxes which are received
as taxes. GOVERNMENT PRODUCES ZERO NET GAIN!
This is compound interest in REVERSE! You lose!

BIG GOVERNMENT AND SOCIALISM are companions
in the destruction of CAPITALISM. US capitalism is what
produced the greatest country in history.

Now for a couple very positive comments.

bail-outs will cause many problems for great numbers
of people, but it will also provide enormous possibilities
for those who refuse to quiver and whine.

A Thankful Thanksgiving

You may be wondering why I would call this article a Thankful Thanksgiving. Aren't all Thanksgivings Thankful? Unfortunately, no. As a person who has experienced over 44 Thanksgivings, I recognize that being thankful is something that we have to work at, even on Thanksgiving.

If your home is like most, your Thanksgiving Day will be very busy, with either traveling to where you want to go or preparing your home to have others over for the day. Either way, that can be very hectic and emotionally trying, which doesn't lend itself to preparing your heart to be reflective and thankful. In fact, Thanksgiving weekend is the most traveled weekend in America. Airports are full, and not always providing much room for contemplation of your good fortune.

This means all the more that if we want to be the kind of people who are characterized by thankfulness, then we must make sure that we focus on it, and not just on Thanksgiving Day, but at all times during the year.

Here are a few key words as well as some thoughts that are simple and practical to apply; something you can use right away in your quest for becoming more thankful:

Time. Set aside time regularly to be quiet, to reflect. We live in the fastest paced time ever. From the moment we awake to the moment we collapse into bed, we have the opportunity to go at full speed and never slow down. If we schedule time every day in which we can be quiet and reflect, we will free our hearts and minds up from the tyranny of the urgent and rushed.

Thought. Give thought to the many blessings that you have. Living in a consumer culture, most of us are fully aware of what we do not have and how we absolutely must have "it." But how often do we reflect upon that which we already have? Take some time each day and think of one or two things that you have that you may typically take for granted and then take a moment and give thanks for those. In fact, I make it a part of my reflection time to review a list of things that I'm thankful for.

Generosity. Be generous toward those with less and not envious of those with more. We tend to look at others who may be wealthier than ourselves and think, "I sure wish I had what he does." That kind of thinking breeds envy and jealousy rather than contentment. What can we do to break that cycle? I would suggest being generous to those who are less fortunate than yourself. Go to work at a food bank. And not just during the holidays - everybody works there then - but on a regular basis during the year. That will remind you of how good you really have it.

Ask. Ask a friend what they are thankful for. The next time you are at lunch with a friend, ask him or her what they are most thankful for. You will be amazed at the answers you receive and you will create a meaningful bond with your friends as you focus on this powerful question.

Acknowledge. Lastly, tell those you love how thankful you are for having them in your life. So many times we neglect to take the time to craft the words to express to those closest to us what their presence in our lives means to us. Take the opportunity of Thanksgiving Day to write them a note or sometime during the day put your hand on their shoulder, look them in the eyes and tell them. Let them know what they mean to you, and in return you'll begin to create the possibility of deeper, richer, more fulfilling relationships with those you love.

Of course we should do what we can to make the most of the day we call Thanksgiving, but wouldn't it be a shame if the only time we reflected on our blessings was that one Thursday in November? And the answer is, of course! So let's do our best to be aware of the many great gifts that we have each and every day of the year. As we do so we will see our hearts soar and our minds will experience more and more at peace as we regularly remember and remain aware of our good fortune.

Challenges to Pursue

Review your performance. Whether it's communication, whether it's activity, whether it's a CEO, whether it's on the job. Here's what my father said, "Always do more than you are paid for to make an investment in your future." Now some unions would argue with that. My father was so unique. Review your performance--your language with your children. Say, "Have I been too harsh, too strong, too stubborn? Should I have learned to be easier and mixed more compassion with the tough stuff I have to deal with?" And yes, prayer will help. Ask for help to say the right thing, not to ruin it all by poor communication.

Face your fears. That's how you conquer them. Don't dismiss them; face them. Say, "Here's what I'm afraid of. I wonder what I could do to change that."

Exercise your willpower to change direction. You don't have to keep doing what you've been doing the last 6 years if it's not yielding the benefits you want. My mentor helped me review the last six years so I wouldn't repeat those errors the next six. Pick a new destination and go that way. Use your willpower to start the process. You don't have to repeat last year. Clean up the errors. Invest it now in the next year. Watch it make the difference.

Admit your mistakes. Sometimes you have to admit them to others. Parents have to do it. We ask our kids do it; we have to do it. Here's one of the best phrases in the English language, "I'm sorry." The reason those are good words is because they could start a whole new relationship. It could start two people going in a whole new direction. Simple, not easy. You get this done, the turnaround can be dramatic. The early years can be big in payoff. Here's the big one. Admit your mistakes to yourself. You don't have to babble about them to everyone in the neighborhood. But it doesn't hurt to sit down and have a conversation with yourself and say, "There's no use kidding myself. Here's where I really am. I've got pennies in my pocket and I've got nothing in the bank." That's what I said after a Girl Scout left my door. I had a conversation with myself and I said, "I don't want this to happen anymore."

Refine your goals. Start the process. Set some higher goals. Reach for some higher purpose. Go for something beyond what you thought you could do.

Believe in yourself. You've got to believe in God and you've got to believe in the community. You've got to believe in the possibilities. You've got to believe in the economy. You've got to believe that tomorrow can be better than today. Here's the big one. Believe in yourself. There isn't a skill you can't learn; there isn't a discipline you can't try; there isn't a class you can't take; there isn't a book you couldn't read.

Ask for wisdom. This is communication of the highest source. Ask for wisdom that creates answers. Ask for the wisdom that creates faith to believe things are possible. Ask for wisdom to deal with the challenges for today and tomorrow, to deal with the challenges your family brings you. Don't wish it was easier; wish you were better.

Conserve your time. Sometimes we get faked out. Bill Bailey says the average person says, "I've got twenty more years." No, Bill says you've got twenty more times. If you go fishing once a year, you've only got twenty more times to go fishing, not twenty years. That fakes you out.

Invest your profits. Here's one of the philosophies that Mr. Shoaff gives. Profits are better than wages. Wages make you a living, profits make you a fortune. Could we start earning profits while we make a living? The answer is yes.

Protect your family. These are troublesome times. At school--troublesome times. Protect your family as best you can from the hidden dangers, the lurking evil one.

Live with intensity. You might as well turn it up a notch or two. Invest more of you in whatever you do. Be a little stronger; be a little wiser. Step up your vitality contribution. Put everything you've got into everything you do and then ask for more vitality, more strength and more vigor, more heart and more soul.

Find your place. If you just work on a job, find the best place you can serve well, and sure enough they'll ask you to occupy a better place. And if you keep doing a job well, do the very best you can. That's your best way out. Here's a Bible phrase. If you work on your gifts, they'll make a place for you.

Demand integrity from yourself. Integrity is like loyalty. You can't demand it of someone else; you can only demand it of yourself. Be the best example of loyalty, and you'll get some loyal followers. Be the best example of integrity, and you'll have people around you who have integrity. Lead the way.

Welcome the disciplines. Can't give you much better advice than that because disciplines create the reality. Disciplines build cities. A well-disciplined activity creates abundance, creates uniqueness, productivity.

Fight for what's right. It's a fight we're in. The story-teller says "And there was great war in heaven." One of the writers of later scripture said, "I fought a good fight." That's extraordinary to be able to say. I fought for my kids, and I fought for what was right and I fought for good health, and I fought to protect my company and I fought for a good career that would bless my family. I fought a good fight. It's good to fight the encroachment. Opposites are in conflict, and you're in the middle. If you want something valuable, you've got to fight for it. Then this writer also said, "I fought a good fight and I kept the faith." See, that's the deal. Keep faith with your family. Fight the enemy and keep faith. Fight the illness and keep faith. Fight the evil and keep faith. I can't give you much better advice.

New Interview With Warren Buffett

Addison Wiggin at Agora Financial sat down with Warren Buffett for an interview. He published that interview in his new book, I.O.U.S.A – One Nation. Under Stress. In Debt, which is out this week. Somehow, Addison managed to interview the most important money men in the world... including Buffett, Alan Greenspan, Steve Forbes, Paul O'Neill, Paul Volcker, Robert Rubin, and more.

On our national debt problems...

We're transferring small bits of the country – ownership of the country, or IOUs – to the rest of the world. But our national pie is still growing.

We're like a very, very, very, rich family that owns a farm the size of Texas, and we have all this output coming from the farm. Now, because we consume a little more than we produce, we're selling bits of that farm daily, a couple billion worth. Or we're giving a small mortgage on it which we don't even notice, but it builds up over time.

So even though we own a little less of the farm, or we create these IOUs against it, our equity in the farm actually increases somewhat. That's why people will benefit over time. But they won't benefit as much as if they hadn't given the IOUs or sold off little pieces of the farm.

On gold...

Over time, people have dug up gold from the ground in far remote areas and then they've shipped it thousands and thousands of miles. And they've put it in the ground over here and hired guards to stand over it. So the real utility of gold is not that high. It's been something that people turn to, but it has not been a very good investment.

On China and globalization...

In 1790, there were about 4 million people in the U.S. and about 290 million in China. They were just as smart as we were. They had a climate that was about the same as ours. And yet we did enormously well over the next 217 years... as compared to China.

Now, why did we do that? Well, we had a market system, a rule of law, and equality of opportunity... and that system unleashed the potential of citizens in the United States to an extent far greater than in many countries including, up until recently, China.

About the risk of default of U.S. government bonds...

The U.S. government bond is absolutely certain to be paid. It's just total nonsense when people talk about the U.S. going bankrupt. I mean, the U.S. government will always pay its debts. The purchasing power of the dollar you receive is likely to be less than the dollar you invested, so you have purchasing power risk... But you should not be afraid of government bonds in terms of being paid.

The unique situation in the U.S. now...

Many years ago, when we lent a lot of money to various emerging countries and were having trouble getting paid back, somebody said that they found it very hard to imagine some Philippine or Thailand worker spending a couple of extra hours every week in the hot sun merely so Citicorp could increase its dividend twice a year. At a point, people say, "To hell with it."

It's much easier just to inflate your way out of it. If you're a South American or Asian country that owes money in dollars, it gets very binding to pay back in dollars. But if you owe it in your own currency, you just print more currency. And we have the ability to print currency. We can denominate debt in our own currency, whereas many countries can't because people don't trust them.

On government economic policies and crises...

We came fairly close to the whole system imploding in the 1930s because of economic conditions. People became very responsive to communism... When people are scared about economics, they'll listen to whoever is the most persuasive... One thing I don't like about the consequences of sustained large trade deficits is I think it makes the potential for demagoguery and really foolish policies more likely over time.

When you think about the history of this country, our economic policies have been pretty darn good. I mean, any country that delivers a seven-for-one increase in per capita living in a century has done an awful lot of things right. It's never happened before in the history of mankind.

What the right policies are...

You want a system where Mike Tyson is fighting for the heavyweight championship and Jack Welch is running General Electric. But you don't want Mike Tyson to be running General Electric and Jack Welch in the heavyweight championship. Government allocation of resources has tended, too often, to misallocate, and I think a market system does a pretty good job of allocating.

Wrapping up...

It's been a marvelous time to be alive. It wasn't really a whole lot better to live in the fourth century BC than the fourth century AD. But it's been a lot better to live in the year 2007 than it was in the year 1807.

...Even those on the low end are doing far better than people on the high end were doing 100 years ago. There're many, many things that a person earning a normal wage in this country can do and enjoy that John D. Rockefeller couldn't do and enjoy. So a rising tide has lifted all the boats... The average American is going to live better 10 years from now, 20 years from now, and 50 years from now.

Evaluating Your Associations

If you were to evaluate the major influences in your life that have shaped the kind of person you are; this has to be high on the list: the people and thoughts you choose to allow into your life. Mr. Shoaff gave me a very important warning in those early days that I would like to share with you. He said, "Never underestimate the power of influence." Indeed, the influence of those around us is so powerful! Many times we don't even realize we're being strongly affected because influences generally develop over an extended period of time.

Peer pressure is an especially powerful force because it is so subtle. If you're around people who spend all they make, chances are excellent that you'll spend all you make. If you are around people who go to more ball games than concerts, chances are excellent that you'll do the same thing. If you are around people who don't read, chances are excellent that you won't read. People can keep nudging us off course a little at a time until finally, we find ourselves asking, "How did I get here?" Those subtle influences need to be studied carefully if we really want our lives to turn out the way we've planned.

With regard to this important point, let me give you three key questions to ask yourself. They may help you to make better analysis of your current associations.

Here is the first question: "Who am I around?" Make a mental note of the people with whom you most often associate. You've got to evaluate everybody who is able to influence you in any way.

The second question is: "What are these associations doing to me?" That's a major question to ask. What have they got me doing? What have they got me listening to? What have they got me reading? Where have they got me going? What do they have me thinking? How have they got me talking? How have they got me feeling? What have they got me saying? You've got to make a serious study of how others are influencing you, both negatively and positively.

Here's a final question: "Is that okay?" Maybe everyone you associate with has been a positive, energizing influence. Then again, maybe there are some bad apples in the bunch. All I'm suggesting here is that you take a close and objective look. Everything is worth a second look, especially the power of influence. Both will take you somewhere, but only one will take you in the direction you need to go.

It's easy to just dismiss the things that influence our lives. One man say's, "I live here, but I don't think it matters. I'm around these people, but I don't think it hurts." I would take another look at that. Remember, everything matters! Sure, some things matter more than others, but everything amounts to something. You've got to keep checking to find out whether your associations are tipping the scales toward the positive or toward the negative. Ignorance is never the best policy. Finding out is the best policy.

Perhaps you've heard the story of the little bird. He had his wing over his eye and he was crying. The owl said to the bird, "You are crying." "Yes," said the little bird, and he pulled his wing away from his eye. "Oh, I see," said the owl. "You're crying because the big bird pecked out your eye." And the little bird said, "No, I'm not crying because the big bird pecked out my eye. I'm crying because I let him."

It's easy to let influence shape our lives, to let associations determine our direction, to let pressures overwhelm us, and to let tides take us. The big question is, are we letting ourselves become what we wish to become?

"My dictionary says that criticism is "the art of judging with propriety of the beauties and faults of a performance; remark on beauties and faults; critical observation, verbal or written."

Col. George Washington Goethels, the man who completed the Panama Canal, handled criticism effectively. During the construction he had numerous problems with the geography, climate and mosquitoes. Like all mammoth projects, he had his critics back home who constantly harped on what he was doing and predicted that he would never complete the project. However, he stuck to the task and said nothing. One day an associate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer the critics?"

"Yes," Goethels responded.
"How?" he was asked.
"With the Canal," Goethels replied.

Though that approach didn't bring instant satisfaction, the Panama Canal itself brought long-term vindication.

Aristotle said criticism was meant as a standard of judging will. Addison said it was ridiculous for any man to criticize the works of another if he has not distinguished himself by his own performance. It has also been said that no one so thoroughly appreciates the value of constructive criticism as the one who is giving it. The world is hard on critics, but on occasion they have real value. Ask yourself this question: "What interest does this person (critic) have in me?" A parent, teacher, employer or coach has a vested interest in your performance. Unfortunately, many of them do not know how to effectively build a person up while giving suggestions that can make a difference. The key is to criticize the performance and not the performer. My mother once criticized my performance by saying, "For most boys this would be all right. But you're not most boys--you're my son and my son can do better than that." She had "criticized the performance," because it needed improvement, but she had praised the performer because he needed the praise.

Action vs. Self Delusion

I have nothing against affirmations as a tool to create action. Repeated to reinforce a disciplined plan, affirmations can help create wonderful results.

But there is also a very thin line between faith and folly. You see - affirmations without action can be the beginnings of self-delusion. And for your well-being there is little worse than self-delusion.

The man who dreams of wealth and yet walks daily toward certain financial disaster and the woman who wishes for happiness and yet thinks thoughts and commits acts that lead her toward certain despair are both victims of the false hope which affirmations without action can manufacture. Why? Because words soothe and, like a narcotic, they lull us into a state of complacency. Remember this: TO MAKE PROGRESS YOU MUST ACTUALLY GET STARTED!

The key is to take a step today. Whatever the project, start TODAY. Start clearing out a drawer of your newly organized desk ... today. Start setting your first goal... today. Start listening to motivational cassettes ... today. Start a sensible weight-reduction plan ... today. Start calling on one tough customer a day ... today. In the process of living, the winds of circumstances blow on us all in an unending flow that touches each of our lives.

We have all experienced the blowing winds of disappointment, despair and heartbreak. When the winds change, we must change. We must struggle to our feet once more and reset the sail in the manner that will steer us toward the destination of our own deliberate choosing. The set of the sail, how we think and how we respond, has a far greater capacity to destroy our lives than any challenges we face. How quickly and responsibly we react to adversity is far more important than the adversity itself. Once we discipline ourselves to understand this, we will finally and willingly conclude that the great challenge of life is to control the process of our thinking.

Learning to reset the sail with the changing winds rather than permitting ourselves to be blown in a direction we did not purposely choose requires the development of a whole new discipline. It involves going to work on establishing a powerful, personal philosophy that will help to influence in a positive way all that we do and that we think and decide. If we can succeed in this worthy endeavor, the result will be a change in the course of our income, lifestyle and relationships, and in how we feel about the things of value as well as the times of challenge. If we can alter the way we perceive, judge and decide upon the main issues of life, then we can dramatically change our lives.

Credit is the lifeblood of American business, especially for the smaller firm. It helps the entrepreneur get started, obtain equipment, build inventory, develop new lines of merchandise, or expand. In brief, credit makes the business grow.

The financing for small business comes largely from the nation's 14,500 commercial banks. Surveys have found that aside from personal savings, banks are the major source of capital for starting new firms. Even more striking, about 85 percent of loans to operating small businesses come from banks, according to a report by the National Federation of Independent Business.

In seeking a loan for your company, you are essentially asking a bank to become your business partner. Before entering the market for a loan, make sure you have done all of the ground work necessary:

(a) How much do you want and for what?
(b) What terms do you need for your loan?
(c) What kind of a business person are you?
(d) What shape is your business in?

Your preparation must also include doing the groundwork of a good consumer: Which banks in your area are known for small business loans? Which ones are the most reliable? Remember, loans are the products that banks sell. Look for the best combination of price, quality, and reputation of supplier. In the end, getting a loan depends upon your credit-worthiness.

1. Planning For A Loan
Before you step into a bank to borrow, you should ask yourself some basic questions. Thinking these through and having answers ready will lead to a more productive credit interview. The answers to questions such as these are central to the lending decision. And the information you provide--backed up by your financial statements--will help the banker make the decision as quickly as possible. Here are some examples:

How do you plan to use the money you will borrow?
How much do you need? (Be prepared to be as specific as you can about why you need the amount requested.)
How long will you need these funds?
How do you plan to generate sufficient cash flow to pay back the loan?

2. Types Of Loans
As a business person, you know that you may need to borrow to maintain or expand your business. But loans come in various forms and some are more appropriate than others for your needs are. The following are some types of loans available. Try to determine how your needs match them.

Short term loans
A line of credit allows you to borrow repeatedly up to a certain amount. You repay and re-borrow as often as you need. At the end of the year, the line of credit may be renewed. This is sometimes called a revolving line of credit because of the repeat borrowing and repayment provisions. These loans, which usually must be secured by collateral, allow you to maintain an even cash flow with which to operate your business. They may allow you to take advantage of special discounts offered by suppliers, or to gear up for a special sales effort. They can tide you over until a customer pays a big bill.

One type of line of credit bearing special mention is the seasonal line of credit. Many businesses have a strong seasonal nature. There may be a time when you need capital to prepare for a seasonal product. The period between its production and the income it produces may be lengthy. Cash flow may be diminished, but you need to keep operating. When applying for such a seasonal loan, determine how much you will need and, based on past experience, when you will be able to repay it. Don't borrow more than you need. Like most other types of lines of credit, this kind of loan is expected to be repaid within a year.

Intermediate term loans
These loans may run as long as three years. Consider such a loan for a business start-up, the purchase of new equipment, the expansion of a store or plant, or an increase in working capital. The intermediate term loan is usually repaid in monthly or quarterly payments from the business's profits. The loan will usually require collateral.

Long term loans
A long term loan typically runs for more than three years, is usually secured, and may be granted for business start-ups, purchasing major equipment, moving a plant or store, or for other purposes.

The long term loan is commonly repaid on a monthly or quarterly basis out of cash flow or profits. The loan agreement may contain provisions which limit your company's other debts, dividends, or principals' salaries or which require minimum equity or working capital levels. It may also require that a percentage of the firm's profits be used expressly to repay the loan. Collateral for a long term loan may be the assets you are purchasing, supplemented by your personal guarantee, stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, or other business assets.

Commercial mortgages
You may need a commercial mortgage if you plan to buy, build, or enlarge a building, or to obtain needed land. Generally, the mortgage is made for 75 to 80 percent of the appraised value of the property and is amortized over a set period of ten to twenty years. The bank will probably require an independent appraisal at the customer's expense.

Should you need cash, property that your company now owns may be mortgaged. If the property, land or building is already mortgaged, you may be able to obtain a second mortgage. The interest rate on the first mortgage should not be affected by the second one. The interest on the second mortgage would be at prevailing rates--most likely higher than the rate of the first mortgage.

Letter of credit
Although not an actual loan, a letter of credit is used to facilitate certain business transactions. Therefore, a request for opening a letter of credit is similar to an application for a loan and is treated the same way.

In domestic use, a standby letter of credit substitutes the bank's credit for the firm's credit by providing the bank's guarantee of payment to a third party if the borrower fails to repay the loan. For example, a small firm manufacturing dresses might need to offer a standby letter of credit to a supplier of cloth to assure the supplier that the bank will provide payment for the cloth if the purchaser cannot.

In an international transaction, a commercial or import letter of credit refers to a specific transaction. It helps insure the buyer and seller, who may be separated by thousands of miles and operate under different legal, political and business practices, that they will both receive protection regarding the receipt of goods and payment for them. For example, a small U.S. tea manufacturer may wish to purchase tea leaves from a supplier in the Orient. The letter of credit would contain provisions guaranteeing that the seller would receive payment by a specified date if the buyer received the merchandise by a certain time and if the merchandise met pre-determined standards of quantity and quality.

Equity Financing
Previously, several types of debt financing have been described. However, another way you can obtain financing for your business is to share its ownership with others. Through this equity financing, additional individuals or firms provide capital for the company but may or may not take part in its operation.

General partners are those who normally contribute both capital and management time. They share in business responsibilities and liabilities. Limited partners are individuals who contribute capital to the business but who normally have neither management responsibilities nor liabilities. A sole proprietorship is a business where there is only one owner, and this person is responsible for all the company's debts.

If you establish a corporation, you can accommodate numerous equity investors in the business. Each investor is a stockholder and owns a part of the company. A privately held corporation may consist of an unlimited number of stockholders. Often they are friends, relatives, or employees. A publicly held corporation is one which seeks to offer ownership to the general public. Shares are sold by an investment banking or stock brokerage firm.

Since the objective is to raise money, the corporation can obtain equity financing through the issuance of a number of instruments:

common stock is issued to friends, relatives, and investors.
preferred stock represents ownership in the business, but requires that its holders be repaid first if the business should go bankrupt.
convertible debentures are bonds which may be converted into common stock before being repaid to holders.
debt warrants allow holders to buy a company's stock even after the debt has been repaid.

A business that is a corporation may enjoy certain advantages in obtaining funds. But bear in mind that corporations are more highly regulated than most other legal entities.

A Note on loan collateral: Banks will usually require the value of the collateral to be somewhat greater than the amount of the loan. One factor to be considered is the liquidity of the collateral. Another consideration is the expected economic life of the collateral. For example, items that rapidly lose value, such as seasonal inventory, are not normally acceptable as collateral for intermediate or long-term debt. When making loans to businesses with multiple owners, such as partnerships or corporations, banks may require a pledge of personal assets or a personal guarantee.

A Note on equity financing: Although some companies select equity financing, debt financing historically has been and currently is preferred by most small firms. The existing tax structure is one special reason for this. Interest paid for a loan is deductible as a valid business expense. It reduces the tax burden. Furthermore, the money obtained through borrowing is controlled by the owner of the business-control over the company is not diminished. SEC Emergency Ruling

The Securities and Exchange Commission will issue an emergency rule later on Tuesday to stop "naked" short selling in major financial firms, including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the SEC said.

The emergency rule would require any person making a short sale in the listed securities to borrow the securities before the short sale is effected and deliver the securities on the settlement date.

Friday 5/23/08 -
Woke early today from the all the comforts of home in Black Diamond, WA. Checked my business, ran some ads, assisted downline with 2 new affiliates, mentored 2 affiliates with their businesses. That took some time, and seemingly put me behind on my goal to hit the road for the Olympic Pennisula by noon, before the traffic associated with a 3-day Memorial Day Weekend. No great rush yet though, my new expedited tri-fold brochures had not yet arrived via UPS yet anyway.

Packed up the truck, with all intentions of my dog (Neah Bay) and I using it as our sleeping quarters. With Gas prices over $4.00, and my truck's preference for high-octane fuel pushing us up over $4.25, lending justification to frugality and Cowboy-ing up, I loaded provisions to accommodate 4-5 day's of barraging the great Northwest with Brochures, Flyers, JV Flyers, Biz Card Flyers, Magnets; and of course the new truck door magnets and window decals. I converted my 1998 Dodge Ram into a Homeless Shelter on Advertising Steroids! Hmmmm . . . still no UPS truck with my Brochures.

Well, we had had about 4 solid days of Seattle Sunshine prior to today, so the lawn was quickly approaching bailing length. Knowing that waiting to mow til I got back would mean that I would have 500 tree huggers camping in my lawn trying to prevent me from mowing the newly established rainforest if I waited. So I mowed, and banged my knee pretty good re-installing the mower deck that decided to jump off the tractor. 1 hr later . . . hmmmm . . . still no brochures. Checked business, paid the bills, made a few calls to assist affiliates with their requests, whipped up some leftover spagetti. BINGO . . . brochures arrived! Whoops, I hadn't showered yet; and it might be cowboy showers only for the next couple of days, so better take advantage of a hot shower before we hit the road.

Freshly showered, we dropped the bills in the mail box and we're off at 2:45PM; yea! We jumped on Hwy 18 and headed for I-5 to swing down below Olympia. Screeeech, 5 minutes into the trip Hwy 18 is stopped and backed up 6 miles before I-5, ugh! So much for beating the traffic! So Neah Bay and I broke into the fresh Oatmeal Cookies Patty made for our trip that morning. Normally about 2.75 hrs to Westport, WA, I knew it was going to be extended, especially when we didn't round Olympia til about 2 hrs in. No biggie, we we're in no hurry. 3.5 hrs later we arrived in Wesport, and after a quick nature call, I immediately started stuffing brochures, tacking up flyers, and generally pounding the pavement of a shockingly mostly Closed Up town. After finishing up the downtown area, I decided Neah deserved some time out of the truck. So I took her for a stroll. Westport is a pretty sleepy fishing & tourist town, where you can pretty much walk down the middle of the street, so we did. Guess that earlier nature call hadn't been quite long enough, as Neah decided to hold up traffic for a minute as she deposited some cookies in the middle of the main drag. It was nice to be in a loose community, of chuckling and pointing granters of the right-of way; away from the typical appalled gaspers of disgust that such an activity would have produced on the other side of Puget Sound.

We loaded back in our AdWagon and hit the strip out of town. Rounding Aberdeen we turned for the Pacific Beaches in Hoquim . . . Destination Ocean Shores, Tourist-Town of Washington's Pacific Beaches. Rolled in to town a little before 8:00PM, scoped out a plan for tomorrow, checked out the dense fog on the beach, and decided we needed to look for a spot to make camp.

I hadn't mentioned before that for the past 14 years I have used a CPAP machine for sleeping, since I simply stop breathing when I go to sleep. I haven't slept more than 30 minutes to an hour without it for the past 14 years; but, I was prepared to sleep in short stints without it this whole trip; sitting semi-erect and cowboy-ing up. But hey, I brought an extension cord and 220 plug just in case. Fooled myself #1 . . . The campgrounds with electricty would be pretty cheap, and I could sleep with my CPAP I thought. So I checked out a couple. No Vacancy w/elect., No Vacancy with Elec. Okay, I'm pretty familiar with the coast, so were going to head up the coast a few miles, and some of the fishing camps would surely have vacancy with elect. We drove up to Ocean City, and sure enough, 1st try. Checked in at $20 for the night; heck-of- a-deal for a good nights sleep. Oh-Oh, I can hardly walk! Seems that knee I had banged up earlier decided that being banged around and pounding the pavement of Westport had had enough! Oh well, gotta hurry-hobble up and get camp setup with only a few minutes of daylight left.

Quickly started a fire (or should I say a smoke), set up the truck for sleeping, and broke out the cooler. Knee hurts pretty bad no matter how I hold it, but we mess with the fire until we have enough heat to cook up some hotdogs and beefaroni. Neah settles down to a freshly peanut butter packed bone (I stuffed 1/2 doz. for her before we left) Sure glad I brought a candle, 'cause this cowboy's fire wasn't throwing enough light to see otherwise, and I didn't want to waste the batteries of the flashlight. So we ate, went for a short walk, and settled in for more knee-pain moaning - finally we got a decent fire. About 11:00PM we decide it's time to climb in the truck for the night. Quite a task for a knee that doesn't want to bend anymore. Well the truck accommodations were not such that I could actually extend or stretch that leg, so I wriggled around for over an hour before Fooling Myself #2 came in to play. Decided that this wasn't going to work all night, as I was going to need good rest and a strong leg if I was going to carry out my advertising distribution task of tomorrow. I hobbled back out of the truck and packed up in the dark. We were headed to get a real room!

We drove up past Copalis Crossing, and everything was Closed. Arrived back in Ocean Shores a little before 1:00AM, and found a room with no effort. I was beat; in more ways than one. Wasn't concerned about putting anything in the room but me, my dog, her blanket, food, water and my CPAP. Huh, where is my unique power cord for my CPAP machine? Tore up the truck bed, tore up the cab, NO CORD!!! Wait I remember somewhere after leaving the campground I had heard this racket like something had slap\rattled the back window (exactly where I had fed the extension cord into the cab earlier) DAMNIT!

Loaded Neah and my tired butt back into the truck to see if we could back track the last 20 miles and hopefully find that cord somewhere in the road. Returned to the campground; no luck. Drove all the way to the furthest North point where we had traveled earlier looking for a room and turned around. NOTHING! I'm screwed . . . WAIT, as were sitting in the driveway about to re-enter the road - there's my cord - YEA! Back to Ocean Shores for R&R.

Head hit the pillow a little after 2:00AM, what a relief to mind and knee!

Having spent many a night in hotels across North America in a former J. O. B. one of my rituals was always to turn the alarm clock toward the bed; so I could peek from my pillow to check the time. Didn't happen last night. When I rolled over in the night, I noticed the unmistakable daylight seeping in through the venetian blinded window. I raised my head enough to catch a slight glimpse of the time; 9:30AM. Thoughts of a 10:00AM checkout entered my head, and without hesitation I slapped on some pants, grabbed my smokes and took Neah outside. Neah did her business, and I sat on the tailgate of the truck and puffed a smoke. Stepped back in the room to start some coffee, and was now face to face with the room clock - 5:35AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Checked my watch for confirmation, yep 5:35AM - CRAP! Debated for a few minutes, grabbed bag from truck, and readied everything to prep for a new day. Nope wasn't going to happen; needed more rest! Crashed for 2 more hours, awakened rested with reasonably working knee again.

Decided that after the 1st night being a rough start to our trip, Neah and I deserved a better breakfast that the rations stuffed in the cooler in the back of the truck. After a shower and reloading the truck we headed for McDonalds. Ordered up each a couple of breakfast burritos, and decided we would drive out on the beach and eat. We were each enjoying our hot breakfast, when suddenly mine got spongy! What the hell! My burrito has a latex glove finger in it!!!!!! Looks like day 1 has carried over.

I pounded Ocean Shores heavy with printed media, even attending a Home Show at the Convention Center and networking with a few home business marketers working booths. With Ocean shores well decorated, we headed up the coast. I tacked flyers on every business, post office, and place I could find. At resorts, I filled brochure racks, dropped brochures in front of every door, layed them in lobby's, breakfast nooks, swimming pools, restaurants, bars, and gift shops. We hammered the towns Pacific Beach, Moclips, and Tahola. We came back inland a bit and hammered Aloha, Humptulips, Neilton, Quinalt, and everything in between. It was early evening and we decided that Forks, WA would be our stopping point for the night. So we drove and distributed on our way to Forks, again with a re-wearied knee and thoughts of another comfortable night in a motel. We arrived in Forks around 7:30PM and started looking for a room 1st. Our luck was still in force, as there wasn't a room or campsite available anywhere for at least another 1.5 hrs away! CRAP! I figured that we were going to have to foresake Forks and many areas to make our way to Port Angeles. So we headed north. About 10 miles north of Forks I noticed this really rundown trailer park, with a delapitated sign that appeared that at one time they accepted RVs. I pulled in and inquired. Nope, they had plenty of 1950's trailers and a few 1960's travel trailers, but, they didn't accept anything but residents. I explained my circumstance to the elderly woman, and she very graciously advised that she would allow me to sleep in my truck and hook up my electricity for $20 if my adapter worked with her outlet. She was closing her office in 5 minutes, so I could park back by the restooms and showers, test my plug, and if she didn't hear back from me in 5 minutes she would assume that I was staying; but no fires. DEAL. I could eat cold food; I was to beat to drive back 10 miles to get a hot meal anyway. So Neah and I hurriedly tested the plug. hmmm no power. Tested another outlet, Eureka! I quickly made up our beds before we lost light. I fired up our candle, put out Neah's dinner and settled on to the tailgate for some beefaroni on bread dinner. Wow! These old delapitated travel trailers are actually peoples homes! I made my way over to the restroom shower area - freakin' coded locks!!! No biggie tonight, as I'm in the woods, but, shower tomorrow wasn't going to happen, as I knew my elderly host didn't open the office until 10:00AM. As we sat and watched stars and listened to the poverty stricken park engage in some colorful indoor between trailer drunken exchanges - we contemplated numerous things; even laying out a tarp and sleeping on the ground. Re-Thought that, being in heavy cougar and bear teritory.
Neah felt very blessed for the Peanut Butter stuffed bone she was enjoying. :o)

Crashed about 11:00PM, with my hunting knife resting under my right hand. Afterall, here I was sleeping in a poverty stricken area middle of nowhere with a couple of "Make $250K per Year" magnets on my doors! Up at 1:00PM to stretch, smoke and let Neah do her business. Crashed through the night, woke to icy windows about 6:00AM; and something ate Neah' Dinner! Quick Pack and headed North.

Tacking flyers along the way, the truck started to act a bit funny. Not a big concern, but it seemed to be missing a little. We turned up the Hwy toward Neah Bay, WA (my favorite place in this world, and namesake of my great Airedale Terrier and travel buddy) Knowing the terrain and the area, I decided with the way the truck was acting, I best not take the chance, so we turned back and headed for Port Angeles. Hammered Port Angeles with printed media, hammered Sequim, and hammered everything where you could drive a tack down the entire west side of Puget Sound following Hwy101. I simply didn't have enough inventory to hit all of the little inlet towns or Kitsap Pennisula, so we stayed the coarse on 101 to Shelton, WA; where I exhausted my stock. By 5:00PM we were rounding Olympia and headed for home.

10 Time More Oil Than ExxonMobile

How to Deal with the Daily Drama of Economic Trends

What is an Economic Trend?

You probably have a more technical definition of an economic trend than I do, but here’s mine. An economic trend is a bunch of dots. If you took all of the economic performances of all of the businesses around the world on a given day and averaged them into a single dot, then you would have the beginning of a trend. If you did that every day for several weeks, months, and years, then you would have a bunch of dots. You could then draw a best–fit curve that represents the flow of the dots. At that point you could say, “We’re heading into a recession,” or “We’re in a recession.” You could then use either of those statements to justify slowing down spending to save capital and to stop investing in creating innovative ways to add more value to customers.

I suggest you don’t do that.

The Importance of Perseverance and Perspective

The more important factor in determining your long–term success as a business is not how the dots are trending, but rather your willingness and the willingness of the people in your business to persevere and sustain your focus. Especially on creating value for your customers and prospective customers. I’ll talk more about perseverance in a moment.

This recession is not The Great Depression. My grandparents were born in the 1920's. They literally grew up in The Great Depression. My grandfathers literally worked their butts off to get any money to put food on the table.

We’re still living in some of the very best economic times in the history of the world. They may not be as amazing as they were three years ago, but they are still pretty spectacular. In the U.S., we all got a little too caught up in the housing boom and now we’re paying for it. Just like when we got a little too caught up in the dot–com boom of 1999 and the gold rush boom of 1890. When we start thinking irrationally and assume we’ve found the secret to easy wealth, we do some pretty silly things and then we pay for it. But we’re going to be okay. That is, we’re going to be okay if we don’t talk ourselves out of future successes.

The Role of the Media

The economy has replaced Iraq as the lead story in most of the media that I read and watch. And since there are a lot more media outlets than there were 15 years ago, the need for more compelling stories for the media to tell is overwhelming. As a result, we get bombarded every day with bad economic news.

Here’s my advice: don’t let the media talk you out of what you are capable of achieving.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

That’s one of my favorite quotes and it’s from Franklin Roosevelt. He said that during The Great Depression. Recently, I thought about that quote in more depth. What is “fear itself”? “Fear itself” refers to the psychologically debilitating perspective that things are really bad and they are only going to get worse no matter what I do.

In other words, the only thing we have to be afraid of is the possibility that a critical mass of people could feel that no matter what they do the economy is never going to get better. If that happens, then we could be in real trouble. That’s called “fatalism.” When people feel they have no control over their future, they stop investing in developing themselves and their employees. They stop trying to innovate and create more value for other people. They just say to themselves, “Whatever is going to happen is outside of my control so I’m going to roll up in a little ball and try not to get hurt.” If that happens, we’re in a world of hurt.

The Sources of Perseverance

What are the sources of perseverance? I think there are two factors: confidence and enthusiasm.

Confidence

Confidence is the degree to which you believe you’re going to succeed in an upcoming situation. The more you believe you are going to succeed in an upcoming situation, the more likely you are to persevere.

Over the past 20 years I’ve read on average 30 books a year or approximately 600 books in all. I’ve learned so much from these wonderful books. However, on the topic of confidence, the business literature is pretty pathetic.

80% of the books never mention confidence as a factor in generating long–term success. 10% make fun of the topic and say that “confidence” is a soft skill. 5% say that to develop self–confidence you should pound on your chest and repeat aphorisms like, “I am great.” These aphorisms do not increase your belief that you will succeed in an upcoming situation. All that happens is you get a really sore chest. 4% say that self–confidence is a very important factor in long–term success, which isn’t very helpful because we already knew that. Then about 1% of the books actually talk about how to strengthen self–confidence, which is the piece that is really useful.

Strengthening self–confidence is a two–step process: review past successes and preview future successes.

Recall a time in your life when you overcame the odds and did something that you or somebody else didn't think you could do. It could be at any age level. What was your goal, what were the obstacles, how did you persevere, and what did it feel like when you won? What lessons did you learn from that experience that you could use in your current situation? Don’t just think about this exercise, actually do it. Write down your answers. Reading what I wrote will have no impact on your confidence going forward. You actually have to stop and recall one of your past success stories. Share the story with another person. Self–confidence is built on previous successes, but you have to pause long enough to actually recall those stories.

Then to tighten up your confidence, focus on a future success. Answer these questions: what do I want to achieve, why do I want to achieve it, and why do I expect to achieve it? Write your answers down. Don’t just think about the exercise.

Enthusiasm

I learned a lot from Dale Carnegie, both from his books and his classes. However, I disagree with him on one thing. He said, “To be enthusiastic, act enthusiastic.” I think if you act enthusiastic when you’re really not you will come across as a fake. People will doubt your sincerity.

I think developing true enthusiasm is a two–step process:

First, clarify the purpose of why you do what you do for a living. What is your purpose beyond the paycheck?

Second, focus everyday on fulfilling that purpose.

I’ve been asked many, many times over the past how I maintain my enthusiasm. The truth is I have a clear purpose. My purpose is to work with people so they achieve great performances. That was my purpose when I was in high school, college, when I worked with someone as a coach, when I gave a speach, and when I wrote an article. And it’s still my purpose today. I’m writing this article with enthusiasm because I’m focused on my purpose. I want you to achieve an extraordinary performance in what you do for a living.

Stay Focused on Your Approach

When Trevor Immelman won the Masters Golf Tournament a few weeks ago, he said that during the final round on Sunday he never looked at the leader board until he was standing on the 18th green. He said he didn’t want the results of the other golfers to affect his approach for each shot. He knew he was in the lead going in to the final round, and he had already decided on his approach to each of the holes. He maintained his focus all the way to the end.

As you look to the remaining months in 2008, decide on the approach you are going to take to deliver value and then stay focused on delivering that value regardless of the results of other people around you.

Maintain a Historical Perspective

I spoke at to a group last week, and had lunch with a person from Australia. I was whining about $4 per gallon gas prices, and he woke me up. He said, “Four dollars is cheap. In Australia, it’s more like seven dollars.” Then he really hit home. A six–pack of beer in the U.S. that is $5 costs $16 in Australia.

During my talks, I usually ask folks to turn off their cell phones. One day a man took a call and stood up. He gathered his papers to walk out. I thought, “My gosh, can’t these folks get away from work for a few hours to concentrate on their own effectiveness.” Then he said to the group, “My wife is very sick and she’s in the hospital. I have to go be with her.” Wham. Instant perspective. No matter how serious the economic trends become they are not as serious as life or death.

In order to deal with the daily drama of economic trends, maintain your perspective and continue to persevere.

JPMorgan and the U.S. Treasury just saved us from the real risk of Depression...

It was the Panic of '07. The economy was weakening. Stocks were falling. Banks had lent too much and were now seriously tightening up. It all came to a head when a major bank was about to fail. Something had to be done.

The U.S. Treasury understood the risk of a downward spiral. So after a secret meeting, it took the surprising step of providing a whopping $30 million to JPMorgan and other bankers. The goal was huge... it was to save the U.S. financial system. In hindsight, it worked...

Ultimately, the speedy actions of JPMorgan and the Treasury marked the bottom in the banking crisis and the stock market.

Wait a minute! There's something wrong with that story... Can you figure it out?

This was the Panic of 1907! The story today is similar to 100 years ago... only it's billions instead of millions from the government to save the financial system...

After our multiple credit crises in 2007, it all came to a head last month.

Earlier this month, our current Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson released a 218-page proposal, in part arguing the Federal Reserve should be granted exceptional new powers to deal with crises.

Once again, history repeats...

I've not been to the Jekyll Island Club; but,... It is the resort in Georgia where it's said the Federal Reserve was created, after the Panic of 1907.

Back then, a half-dozen men – supposedly representing a sixth of the world's wealth – sneaked out of New York and headed to this nearly deserted Georgia island. They lived here for a week under such secrecy they didn't use their real names (so the servants wouldn't know what was going on). B.C. Forbes called it "the strangest, most secret expedition in American finance."

Personally, I think many Jekyll Island-style meetings have been happening in the last month. I think many departments of government finally got sufficiently scared. And they're now in hyper "fix it" mode.

I'm not a fan of government intervention in markets, as the usual result is a colossal waste of taxpayer money. The only time intervention has a chance of working is if we are close to a turning point anyway... Then sometimes a nudge from the government starts the pendulum swinging quicker and more powerfully in its new direction. That's where I believe we are.
If this is the case, once again, we need to be looking to buy financial stocks. With the Fed now proving it'll provide a backstop to the financial system, the argument is only getting stronger...

Financial stocks have been beaten up. Most of them deserved it. Like UBS, which announced this week its subprime writedowns are up to $37 billion, many big banks took too much risk and bought "derivatives" they didn't fully understand. Now they're paying for it.

But some banks didn't do stupid things. The thing is, there are literally thousands of financial companies. Looking for the needle in the haystack – the one bank that didn't get into U.S. subprime real estate, didn't invest in all these exotic financial instruments, and didn't take on too much risk – is hard work!

How high could it rise? In 1907, it took two years for stocks to double. I think today, we can see the same kind of move, in the same time frame, in regional banks. So what are those who wish to build and maintain wealth doing during through these financially turbulent times? They're investing in themselves, they're recession-proofing themselves, and they're enjoying some truly luxurious benefits.

9. Subscribe to a new Ezine - Fresh thoughts for your webpage from other marketers perspectives is always a good idea.

10. Negotiate links with high pr websites - The importance of your website is only as good as Google thinks it is. If you link with sites that are an authority on your website's theme, Google will look at it as an authority site.

11. Advertise, Advertise, Advertise!

Give your latest efforts some time to sink in. Google updates your website, and every one elses, quarterly. They index on a weekly basis, usually on the weekend. Don't expect your efforts to have immediate results. With consistent effort and patience, you should see your home based business opportunity climbing the website ranks over time.

Bizarre Economics: Why High Oil Prices Have Reduced Supply

High oil prices are reducing oil supply.

I know this sounds crazy... after all, one of the most basic laws of human behavior dictates that if a product soars in price, folks will come out of the woodwork to produce and increase supply. In today's case, the price of oil is up 256% in the past five years.

The soaring price of oil is causing something funny to happen to the world's oil supply. Oil-producing countries like Ecuador, Venezuela, Russia, and Nigeria sit on unbelievable stores of wealth... and they're not keen on sharing it with anyone... especially a Western oil company. Ask an oilman who's done business in Russia or Venezuela recently, and he'll simply shake his head.

I've got no problem with a country legally protecting its interests... but here's the problem: Most government oil companies aren't as efficient at producing oil as the public companies that must operate at a profit or die.

Companies like ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil are forced into less promising areas... which drives up production costs... which drives up oil prices. I recently read a report that claimed oil producers must now spend twice the money for one-third less production than they did six years ago. These diminishing returns are hard on shareholders.

And so is Hugo Chavez... The big man of Latin America just stole billions of barrels of oil from a whole set of oil companies, including Statoil, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil. Ecuador is doing much the same thing to Occidental, and Bolivia with Repsol and Total. In fact, the disease is spreading. Nigeria is considering a similar route.

Major oil companies take all the financial risk of exploring for oil... conducting geologic analysis, putting crews in the field, building camps and roads, and doing all the work that leads to the drill bit being put to ground. If they're wrong, they're left with nothing. If they're right, they'll find a giant field that produces for years to come.

Nationalization changes that calculation entirely. Companies still take all the risk, but governments bank all the rewards. Less return to oil companies means less investment in exploration. In the end, nationalization will lead to much higher oil prices.

Hugo Chavez hired his cousin to run PDVSA, the state oil company. In spite of record oil prices, the company ran up $12 billion in debt in 2007. In addition, it could wind up responsible for another $10 billion in compensation to Exxon.

That kind of nepotism will eventually destroy the petroleum industry in many of these countries, much as it's done in Mexico. Pemex, the national oil company, is now more than $42 billion in debt, and its single best asset, the Cantarell field, is a debacle. Its production is declining precipitously (down 28% in 2006 alone).

In the meantime, demand for oil is rising... relentlessly.

China, for example, plans to build at least eight 200,000-barrel-per-day refineries in the next five years, which will compete with the U.S. refiners for supply. And, paradoxically, higher oil prices have led to higher demand in the Middle East, as oil wealth trickles down.

So where does that leave us?

Canada. Much of the world – and its oil companies – have turned to Canada for a solution. Canada holds some of the largest untapped oil reserves. It's in the most politically stable region of the world. It's protected by the world's greatest military power.

Even better, Canada still lets oil companies enjoy the rewards for taking risks. And the risks are low – the oil is easy to find. It's not like drilling through a mile of ocean and two miles of sediments. You only need to drill down about 500 feet...

Canada is already the U.S.'s favorite oil supplier. We buy nearly 18% of our crude oil imports from Canada. In fact, by the end of 2007, Canada supplied more oil to the U.S. than all the Persian Gulf states combined.

Investors in Canada's enormous oil industry can sit back and watch the antics of Venezuela and their ilk without worry. All that fuss is just making Canada's resources more and more valuable.

If you're happy with your current salary, it would be easy to just sit back and enjoy it. But if you want to make sure your earnings keep rising over the long term, you need a strategy to protect against salary plateaus and unemployment.

Experts offer the following tips for maximizing your earnings over the course of your career.

* Watch industry trends carefully.

"If your professional area is vulnerable to economic shifts, don't cling to it just because it is familiar and comfortable," said Libby Pannwitt, principal of the Work Life Design Group, in San Carlos, California. Take a class or even get an advanced degree to arm yourself with skills that are more enduring.

For example, Marianne Adoradio, a recruiter and career counselor in Silicon Valley, said she sees otherwise excellent candidates for human resources positions who don't have global experience -- something that is a requirement for more and more positions. She advises people in the field -- even if they aren't currently job-hunting -- to make sure they're working on projects with a global component. If they aren't, they need to ask their boss how they can gain this experience.

* If you reach a salary plateau, understand the reason.

In many fields, people start out their careers with a succession of rapid salary increases. These increases taper off after a time, though, unless they enter management. Some companies have career paths for non-managers with highly specialized skills, so if you're not interested in management, you may want to pursue one of those.

If the problem is that your field of expertise is no longer in as much demand as it used to be, then you may need to look at a move to a related field.

* Make yourself marketable outside your company as well as inside.

"The most successful people develop themselves to add a lot of value to any company in the industry, not just their company alone," said Steve Levin, principal of Leading Change Consulting & Coaching, in Portola Valley, California. This will give you more leverage in internal negotiations -- and more options if you decide to leave your current company.

One tip for being marketable across an industry: Try to work for "name-brand companies," Adoradio said. Recruiters often prefer candidates who have worked for industry-leading companies. Having one on your resume will help your long-term career prospects.

* Consider multiple income streams.

Some people branch out from their main job to take on consulting work or teach a course in their field. This may help advance your primary career if the work helps you stay current or showcases your expertise. If your second job is in a different field, the second income will increase your earnings and help shield you from the downturns in your main industry.

* Don't focus too narrowly on money.

"Raises and promotions are given to people who generate trust and demonstrate competence to handle more complexity," Levin said. Focus on this, and the money will likely follow.

And remember that learning new skills in a job can be just as important as the money.

"When that learning stops, when that development stops, it's time to move," said Leslie G. Griffen, managing partner of Career Management Associates, in Overland Park, Kansas.

In a recent DM News article, JupiterReseach analyst David Daniels' snapshot of the 2006 email-marketing industry shows spending will grow, while the spam volume continues to fade slowly. However, email wrongly blocked by ISPs will continue to cost marketers about $1 for every $9 in an email-marketing budget:
1. Spending on email marketing will rise 7.5% this year, from $885 million in 2005 to $950 million.
2. Spam will decrease at a compounded annual rate of 9.4% a year through 2010 "but will remain a nuisance."
3. False positives -- email wrongly blocked at all levels of the email delivery channel -- will cost marketers $107 million this year.
4. HTML has nearly universal adoption among consumers: A Jupiter Research consumer survey found just 3% receive only text email.
5. It pays to ask for backup email addresses at registration: 60% of online consumers regularly use two or more email accounts.

The Answer to the World's Coming Food Crisis

"Where's all the soy?" I wonder to myself.

I haven't traveled for 27 hours – into the exact geographic center of South America – to find soybeans. But if looking out of the bus window, I would see only dense tropical foliage.

Then we would come over the top of a hill, and find them. A neat patchwork of fields stretching to the horizon filling the view from both sides of the bus. There are tractors... and combine harvesters... and lines of irrigation scaffold. This is Soylandia.

Two writers at Fortune Magazine coined the name "Soylandia" last month. They use this name to describe the largest continuous patch of farmland on the planet. It stretches from Argentina to the Amazon basin and from the Andes to the Atlantic forests.

"Soylandia... is almost entirely unknown to Americans," they write. "But it may well be the future of one of the world's most important industries: grain agriculture."

Wheat and soybeans are already at all-time highs. Corn is at a 12-year high. After a long bear market in food prices, I think we've now entered a long bull market in agriculture. I believe the world faces a food crisis. And for the next several decades, we're going to struggle to meet world food demand.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says world food production needs to increase by 60% to meet growing demand over the next 20 years. The world simply doesn't have enough arable land available to do this.

Nor do we have enough water... From New Scientist:

Every teaspoon of sugar in your coffee requires 50 cups of water to grow it. Growing the coffee itself requires 140 liters of water, or 1,120 cups. The 250 grams of cotton needed to make a single T-shirt uses 25 bathtubs of water.

Meat production is also water-intensive. To produce a kilo of meat, you need eight kilos of grain. To produce eight kilos of grain, you need 12 meters cubed of water. That's 3,166 gallons of water... enough water to fill a backyard swimming pool. Crops use about 75% of all water withdrawn from rivers, aquifers, and lakes. One-third of the world's population is living in water-scarce areas.

In 1985, China's average consumption of meat was of 20 kilograms per person per year, but per-capita meat consumption has now increased to 50 kilograms. Four hundred of China's 600 largest cities are short of water.

I haven't even mentioned global warming. It will shorten growing seasons. Or increased oil prices. High oil prices make transport and fertilizer more expensive, and biofuel (which competes for resources with food) more attractive.

Soylandia is at the heart of Brazil. Brazil is the world's largest exporter of beef, coffee, orange juice, sugar, and chicken. In 2006, Brazil overtook the U.S. to become the world's largest exporter of soy.

Brazil has 23% of the world's arable land... and at least 40% of it is unused. The country has more unused arable land than all the cropland in the U.S., and that's without any clearing of the Amazon rainforest. Brazil also has ample water... . Proof: 91% of Brazil's electricity comes from hydropower.

I'm Going to Double My Money on a Railcar Full Of...

If you laid all of the 2x4s that make up a railcar full of lumber end to end, they would stretch 32 miles.

I know this oddball fact because I want a railcar full of lumber.

You see, I'm planning to buy a lumber futures contract. The standard contract of lumber on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange is 110,000 board feet. This is the capacity of a standard lumber centerbeam railcar.

I'd love to have this wood in my front yard. But I don't have a warehouse, and I don't have a railroad spur to my door. That's what's great about the futures market. I can buy lumber now for delivery in the future.
A railcar of lumber sells for $20,000. A November delivery of lumber, however, costs about $27,000 today. I'm okay with the extra cost (the $7,000 over the current spot price). Lumber spoils. Storage is expensive. I'll pay the premium for a future delivery.

And in fact, I won't take delivery of my lumber. What would I do with 32 miles of lumber, anyway? I'll sell it to someone else before the delivery date in November.

I want to buy this lumber because, in my opinion, it's too cheap. As a long-time lumber broker and trader told me on the phone just now, prices are "economically unsustainable."

Even the largest, most efficient producers of lumber in North America cannot fill a railcar full of 2x4s for $20,000.

Take Canfor for example. Canfor is the largest producer of lumber in Canada. It made a profit in 2006 and a loss in 2007.

With the market price for a railcar of lumber at $20,000, every lumber producer in Canada is slowly going bankrupt, including Canfor. The Vancouver Sun did a survey. It found the Canadian logging industry shut down 34 lumber mills and fired 10,000 workers in 2007.

Lumber is down in part because the housing industry is in a slump – homebuilding and remodeling make up two-thirds of U.S. lumber consumption. Right now, the major Canadian producers are trying to raise cash and ward off bankruptcy, so they're dumping their inventories on the market. That's pushed lumber prices even lower. But soon, there's going to be a shortage of lumber.

Contractors will notice how cheap lumber is and will decide to start building houses again. But they'll find the forest industry has shuttered all the mills, fired all their workers, and sold all their lumber.

This will cause lumber prices to rise. I expect they will double within two years... to around $40,000 a railroad car. I plan to buy my lumber with 50% borrowed money, so I'll double my money if I'm right. The risk is if prices stay low longer than I expect, I lose $7,000 in storage costs.

If you want to play this idea without using futures, consider buying stock in one of the large Canadian forest-products companies like Canfor (Toronto: CFP) or Western Forest products (Toronto: WEF). But there's risk here, too. These companies have enormous debts and are at a high risk of bankruptcy...

So what's holding me up right now? As much as I'd like to buy, lumber is still in a downtrend. I'm waiting for the price to turn around and prove my thesis. So before I buy my railcar of lumber, I'll wait for a 10% rally in lumber prices.

In the meantime, I will forge ahead with the greatest and easiest money-making operation I've ever discovered.

Why The Recession is Good For Us . . .

"You Americans will come out of this mess just fine," a top executive at a publicly traded British company said this week. "You always do."

"Sometimes it takes a challenge to find out what you're made of," he continued, and I was eating it up. "Americans are not afraid to work."

This last statement stopped me... Is that really true? Do we still have a work ethic back in the States?

I thought about how, for the for the first time in American history, the life expectancy of an American might actually be going down, thanks to bad eating and lack of exercise. And I thought about all the reality television in the States, celebrity meltdowns, video games...

I wondered if Americans are willing to work as hard as he believed.
Then I thought of it from his perspective...

"We had a bloke pick up a computer off a desk and throw it at a window," my friend told me. "But thanks to English law, we still couldn't sack the guy for weeks."

He says it's incredibly difficult to fire someone in England. Worst of all, the employees know it. This causes two problems...

First, English companies are afraid to take risks. They're afraid to be entrepreneurial. If they have a business idea that requires 10 employees to try, they might not try it, simply because they can't fire the 10 guys if it doesn't work.

Second, since the employees know they're not at risk, they can be lazy – really lazy. Apathy kicks in around the office if you know you can't be fired. You just clock in and clock out. It's like lifetime employment, with the government insuring your job. As he explains it, it sounds terrible... It's sounds like the UKSR... the United Kingdom of Socialist Republics.

In order to keep up a socialist republic, a government must have an insatiable appetite for money...

The big news in England this week was British Chancellor Alistair Darling's tax hikes. Taxes are up on the easiest things to raise taxes on: booze, cigarettes, and pollutants. What legislator is really going to stand up and argue against those?

Now, if you buy a new Volvo XC90 in England, you'll have to pay an additional $1,900 in tax. If you buy a beer or a bottle of wine, taxes are up. And a pack of smokes will cost you more in taxes, too. I think these are ridiculous – particularly considering that the Brits are already heavily taxed. Already, a gallon of gas in Britain is about $8. Eight dollars a gallon!

In the eyes of Brits, America is still the Land of Opportunity. While Americans might think that government gets in the way of business, it is nothing like it is in the U.K. and the rest of Europe. Our businesses are set up to encourage entrepreneurship. And while we think we're heavily taxed, our burden isn't as bad as it is in the U.K.

I know my friend is right... America provides opportunity, and sometimes it takes being challenged to find out what you're made of.

As we experience these tough times, I do know two things:

1) In order to have the freedom to get rich, you have to have the risk of getting poor. So you can't forget that booms and busts are a natural part of having a dynamic, growing economy. We had a real estate boom. Now we have the bust.

With the exception of the Great Depression, our economic system has proven to generate more wealth across the board over time than any other system. The recession now may be painful, but it is a part of the right system.

2) Home Businesses do extremely well in a recession. A stocks generally bottom about halfway into a recession. The average fall is typically about 19%. If this recession follows a typical pattern, stocks could bottom by this summer. Not to mention the job losses. What better time to get into business!

(Stocks may have actually bottomed this week... This week felt like the bottom we saw in August 2007, when an enormous amount of fear gripped the market before the Fed came in and saved the day.)

Things may look bad... but even compared to England, we've got things pretty darn good.

Remember, recessions are a normal part of our dynamic economic system. And also remember, you can make a lot of money in small business as the recession bottoms. Based on historical averages, the time to really start your home business is now.

Recession is tough... but it is better than the alternatives you'll find in much of the world, where closet-socialist governments spend enormous amounts of taxpayer money trying to protect people from themselves.

Thanks to our system, as my friend said, we Americans will come out of this mess just fine...

Let's take a lesson from a Tomato.

Is a tomato a fruit?
Or is a tomato a vegetable?

I guess it depends on who you ask,
and their motivation in answering.

That's a little like people you know in business, huh?

Here's the tomato story:
Some background first.

Despite its association with Italian food,
the tomato originated in South America and was taken to Mexico about 3000 years ago.

The Spanish introduced it to Europe.
But, most of us still love it in Italian food.

Here comes the fruit or vegetable question.

Because the tomato is part of the nightshade family,
early American settlers thought it was poisonous.
That perception changed by the early 19th century when Thomas Jefferson started growing tomatoes.

Botanically speaking, the tomato, along with cucumbers, squash and similar foods, is a fruit because it is fleshy and covers seeds.

In popular use today, they (including the tomato) are all considered vegetables.

How did that happen?
Maybe here's why?

In 1893, The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that these types of plants were vegetables because they were served with dinner and not dessert.

There you go...

Why the ruling changing them from the botanical fruits to the political vegetables?

A few years earlier, in 1887, U.S. tariff laws imposed a duty on imported vegetables, but not on fruit.

So what is a tomato? A fruit or a vegetable?

I guess it depends on who you ask.

We could ask the tomato... but that would take a while for the answer.

Are You An Internet Entreprenuer?

In the movie, A Few Good Men, Jack Nicholson’s character screamed the infamous line… “You want the truth?… You can’t handle the truth!” and I feel the same way while writing on this topic, because most people can’t handle the truth.

The Truth being, “Anyone who can send an e-mail, has the ability to be an Internet Entrepreneur!” However, many people start out not believing that statement… because, they can’t handle the truth!.

They may have had predetermined ideas of what an INTERNET ENTREPRENEUR is, does or has to do and they discount themselves without even looking into it, while others, automatically decide they are too old, too busy (or too something) to even think about learning something new. The worst part is, when people think “it’s too good to be true”…just because it’s not the norm.

The old dog new trick theory is set aside when people find out how easy it is to become an Internet Entrepreneur. There are many resources to assist you in building an online business and examples of how much money can be made right from the computer you are reading this on.

So… Don, what does it take to be an Internet Entrepreneur you ask…? Fair question!

Have a Burning Desire… No matter what you decide to do in life, Desire is a core component of success. If you want to do anything, there has to be a “why” behind your plan, otherwise it will run out of steam with the first gust of “the winds of change”…

You gotta have goals… The great motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, is famous for the phase… You gotta have goals! He would repeat it over and over in his seminars and audio series…to the point where you realize… you gotta have goals!

Specific, clear, definitive and in written goals stating exactly what it is that you want to accomplish, seems to be the common denominators of the process.

Once you have a clear vision of your goal(s), things happen (somewhat magically) to bring your goal to fruition. Call it the Law of Attraction, call it focus, energy and attention, call it what you want… there is no denying that a person with a burning desire and goals can accomplish anything!

Find a Mentor or a Coach… This is so important, A good mentor is going to assist you in developing your desires and goals. A Mentor or Coach is someone with experience in similar situations and who has some kind of knowledge you may lack or has been educated by the experiences, successes and/or mistakes of others. They have succeeded in business and life and are looking to assist others to success. A mentor is passionate about you, your business and your future, and has you in their thoughts even when you’re not on their “clock”.

In the online world, there are countless people, books, programs, documents and seminars (both on and off line) which all profess their ability to coach you to success. It is important for you to develop a keen eye for what is real and what is “sales speak” (…you know, commentary to get your dollars from your pocket to theirs). One way to do this, is to find a coach with online experience. This way you have a sounding board to assist you in evaluating the multitude of offers you will see coming your way.

I know in my own coaching practice, my clients (in many different industries, of which I have never worked) have seen their businesses transform, their horizons expanded and their futures become brighter from the conversations and pursuant confidence that comes from our ongoing sessions.

Pay for your Education… Education is expensive, time consuming and cumbersome but invaluable, because once you have it, it’s yours forever. Most people find working on the Internet is much easier than they originally thought! There are millions of sites to advertise on, countless resources to answer your questions and programs to make your learning curve much faster.

Developing skills, education and experience as an Internet Entrepreneur doesn’t come without making an investment of time, money and focus. Let’s address those 3 areas now…

Time: If your business requires you to interact with people, demonstrate product or attend meetings, then you need to commit more time to it and you are limited to 9am to 5pm or acceptable business hours (i.e. 7-10 pm).

Thank goodness the Internet is open 24/7 and can be accessed when I want to work… I find that an hour or two a day will get most projects done…depending on the scope of the project.

Money: Being an Internet Entrepreneur means you have your own business. As such, it takes capitol to run a business. Some people will take out loans, others will use credit cards and some will use savings. 74% of all small businesses are self funded by the owners with personal savings or credit lines (or credit cards).

Many people look to traditional businesses like franchising or “brick and mortar” retail formats to start a business. Today, even owners of traditional businesses are gravitating over to the Internet… Doctors, Lawyers, Executives, Realtors and more are all moving to work online…. The main reasons are; lower cost of entry, no employees, lower overhead, ease of access, no inventory or shipping and fewer headaches in general.

Another alluring part of being an Internet Entrepreneur is the aspiration of residual income. This is money that continues to come in, without any additional effort on your part, this is how freedom is obtained.

When you are looking at any business model, make sure that the system is able to be done by anyone! Essentially this is how I found the income I enjoy and the freedom I was looking for.

Focus: It has been said by many, “you can’t serve 2 masters”, and in most traditional business, that is correct. A traditional business needs 100% of your focus and energy to succeed.

My philosophy has changed as a result of becoming an Internet Entrepreneur. Now, I “focus on life” and my business should be what pays for it…not visa versa. For over 25 years, my focus was on business. Recruiting, training, managing, building, convincing and stressing over the next conquest, life was what happened around the business and sometimes got it the way…

Now, my focus is on living it to it’s fullest, enjoying family and friends and connecting with people on a real level (not with the intent of recruiting them into a business opportunity) but to brighten their day, learn something about them and myself at the same time… to completely enjoy my freedom and assist others in doing the same…

Understanding Risk vs. Reward… An entrepreneur is someone who takes risks”… Actually, a risk taker is someone who plays the lottery, visit a casino or eats food from a can without a label on it. An entrepreneur makes qualified decisions in business, has the ability to influence those decisions with their actions, can react to situations that arise and has the knowledge and experiences to have an expectation of a specific outcome.

As an Internet Entrepreneur, I feel I have total control of every aspect of my business, my life and my future. I will never have to answer to corporate down sizing, changes in management or economic adjustments. As long as I stay connected to my Desires, Goals, Coaches and Mentors and give my businesses the Time, Money and Focus they deserve, I will always be profitable and successful.

The Rewards far out weight the risks, for the Internet Entrepreneur. To know that for a minimal investment, low overhead and to have total control of what your do and how you do it, given the proper system that will automate the processes for you, anyone can be in Internet Entrepreneur!

If you feel this way about yourself (even if it’s down deep inside you waiting to come out…) then, YOU ARE an Internet Entrepreneur! The way to start is to decide and accept that you are an Internet Entrepreneur, and go for it… As Napoleon Hill said in his book, Think and Grow Rich, “what a man can conceive, he will achieve”. Once you believe it, the rest will simply fall into place.

Is Integrity Lost?

What happened to integrity? It seems to have gone the way of the buggy whip. Today so many people think they are going to get "ripped off" "scammed" or "taken" when ever they are looking at online businesses or opportunities. There is a perception that no one has integrity any more. Well, that just isn't the case.

I have learned over time... It is the thief, who thinks everyone steals, and the liar, who thinks everyone lies...with the converse also being true.

Today on the internet, sure there are scams out there and yes, people lose money sometimes...but not everything on the internet is a scam. It would be like saying that every offering on eBay is "too good to be true" or every commercial offering on TV is unrealistic.

Trust and integrity is something that you need to earn, by giving it first... If you don't want to be scammed, don't scam anyone and don't think you are getting scammed...it is a known fact that you get what you think about the most! Unless it's a Nigerian bank official offering you $100,000,000 if you send him $3000...which doesn't make any sense what-so-ever... If you see a business that does make sense to you...go for it and make it work.

The challenge is that when people see offerings on the internet, they expect them to just deposit mountains of money into their bank account...and when they don't (in the first week)... it MUST BE A SCAM... Anyone in their right mind knows that all legitimate businesses take work. If you think you can engage in an internet business and not work at it and still make money...well then, you are scamming yourself.

This is where personal integrity comes in. If you want to find a business, brick and mortar or online, you need to have the integrity to follow your desire.

As an internet entrepreneur, I take what I do seriously. Just like a Doctor or a Lawyer, what I do, I do with integrity and professionalism. So many times, people think that internet marketers are scam-artists; looking for the next quick sale from some unknowing 'dup'...when in fact the people I associate with have the highest level of integrity, honor and caring for the people and their results...more so than in most industries.

It may have been J.D. Rockefeller that once say, "Never trust a man in business, that does not benefit from your success". Nothing describes the network marketing and direct sales industries better...people benefiting for other peoples "successes".

In most "off line" businesses, people are "pitted" against each other...and told to compete for the prize... I recently saw a TV show where a couple got engaged on the way to work, they ran into the boss as they got to work who told them that they were in competition for the promotion. The woman ended up "winning" and the man broke off the engagement...all within one week... sure it was TV, but I am sure it happens in real life too. Two perfectly happy people were torn apart by corporate competition and a distorted view of what is right and wrong. In the online world, more and more, people are offering insights, ideas and programs to assist others in building their business. Sure sometimes they want to get paid for it...no problem, they should, while others give freely of their time.

In some businesses, there is a community developed where leaders assent to a place where they share their ideas and programs with everyone in the organization. This is where integrity is at it apex. In many Network Marketing, MLM and Direct Sales companies, sharing of information is commonplace in the "corporate culture", so much that when people leave those industries and enter the "real world", they are disheartened by the lack of cooperation and camaraderie.

My hope is that the next time you come across an internet business opportunity, and you wonder if it's a scam or not...don't think about it being a scam... Think about who you are and what you want. Think about if the business is right for you. Think about if the business makes sense to you, fits your life style, provides you a feeling of community, bringing you a sense of excitement, a strong comp plan with a continuous residual income stream and a real opportunity to influence others??? If it meets those needs, then you will know what to do.

So, integrity is more about who you are, and what you desire. Integrity is about giving trust, and allowing it to come back to you. Integrity is about the anticipation and the expectation that others will deal with you in a way you would want them to, and how you would deal with them. Integrity isn't Lost... it's just not being used by enough people. If you become one who uses it, pass it on...it will make the world a better place.
